Data-Driven Storytelling

We are surrounded by data. More than surrounded, really. In today’s technology-influenced world, we exist in a data sphere.

Every interaction, question, complaint, click, comment, search, meeting, transaction, behaviour, barrier, response and relationship leaves a trace. Some of that data is obvious and neatly presented in dashboards or reports. Much of it is scattered, messy, overlooked or sitting quietly inside the organisation waiting to be understood.

For practitioners and professionals, the challenge is not simply to collect more data. It is to use the data we already have with greater curiosity, care and purpose.

Data-driven storytelling helps us do that.

This course explores how data can be surfaced, questioned and shaped into stories that help build knowledge, deepen understanding and support the relationships organisations need to maintain trust, legitimacy and their licence to operate.

Data storytelling does more than tell a tale with numbers attached. A strong data story brings together evidence, context, narrative and visualisation. It helps people see what has happened, why it is important, who is affected and what might come next. It can turn something complex into something tangible. It can make hidden work visible. It can reveal a risk, explain a shift, show progress, challenge assumptions or bring a different perspective into view.

Data-driven storytelling also allows stories to travel. A well-built data story can be shared across channels, adapted for different stakeholder and community groups and presented through different touch points: a visual report, an interactive, a briefing, a campaign asset, a stakeholder update, a presentation, a dashboard, a social sequence or a digital narrative.

In this on-demand session, you will learn how to work with data efficiently, ethically and responsibly. You will look at what counts as data, how to interrogate it, how to understand what it can and cannot tell you and how to identify the stories that sit within it.

You will explore how that understanding can be turned into visualisations and digital narratives that clarify rather than decorate. The aim is not to make things look impressive for the sake of it. The aim is to help people understand.

You will practice moving from data to meaning, from meaning to story and from story to action. The session includes a working data pack based on a synthetic infrastructure project, giving you the opportunity to sort through evidence, test claims, surface story angles and consider how the same data might speak differently to different communities, stakeholders and professional needs.

You will also consider the responsibilities that come with data storytelling: privacy, consent, accuracy, representation, bias, context, accessibility, AI-supported analysis and the risk of overclaiming.
